Joe Hartley started carving wood because he wanted a mantel full of cowboys, just like those of his mentor. From that idea, Bayou Creations was born. Hartley began making a name for himself as a carver in 1987, lining up Santa Clauses next to his cowboys and teaching classes. Hartley's specialty is caricatures. His favorite cowboy needs a shave, has legs that bow, and wears a big cowboy hat. Another has no teeth, and still another is taking a bath. And for Christmas there's a cowboy Santa with a rope and
hat, a hound dog Santa,

Hartley is a current member of the North Louisiana Woodcarvers Association and the National Woodcarvers Association. He served as President of the North Louisiana Woodcarvers Association for three consecutive years. Bayou Creations is located in Grand Cane, Louisiana, about thirty miles south of Shreveport, Louisiana.
